Cap It Off
Bill Rodgers was known for training in tough conditions and preferred racing on cooler days. As such, he was often seen wearing a knit beanie over his tousled locks. In 1979, when temperatures in Boston were in the 40s and raining, Bill donned a knit beanie and gloves along with his race kit. Twenty-six point two miles later, Bill held the hat in his hands as he crossed the finish line on Boylston in triumph, clocking 2:09.27 to break his own American record. Our version is delivered in 100% Merino wool and features the Bill Rodgers & Company logo.

When it comes to cold temperatures and moisture management, not to mention downright comfiness, there’s simply nothing like 100% Merino. The BR Cap’s two-gauge construction keeps it fitted without feeling at all constricted. As a finishing touch, we resurrected the classic BR logo from his original beanies.
Game Changer
Bill Rodgers was a catalyst of the running boom of the 1970s and 80s, inspiring Americans of all ages and backgrounds to take up the sport. Winning four Boston Marathons and four New York City Marathons, “Boston Billy” captivated the nation with his insouciant air and blue- collar approach to the sport. At a time when professional running contracts barely covered an athlete’s bills, Rodgers made his own way. He started one of the first running-specific sportswear lines – Bill Rodgers & Company – and opened the Bill Rodgers Running Center, a store and community hub, which employed many of Boston’s top athletes like Patti Catalano and served as the unofficial hub of Boston’s running scene.
The Bill Rodgers
Collection
Bill Rodgers & Company pioneered many of the refinements found in the running clothing of his era, from silhouettes cut differently for men and women to materials selected with the marathon in mind. The Tracksmith Bill Rodgers Collection builds on these innovations and celebrates the spirit of Bill’s Boston heyday, an era in which running was as fun as it was fast.
