Every team has a track house. And on any given Sunday, after the long run is complete and pancakes have been eaten, you can find athletes lounging in their sweats as they recover from another heavy mileage week. While this tradition has held strong for decades, today’s sweats have not: cheap, plastic-feeling fabrics and unnecessary details, like welded pockets and zippers, had us yearning for something more.

We’ve long obsessed over classic team-issued gear - that symbol of belonging handed out at the beginning of the season. Meant to last from freshman to senior year, from post-workout to class, with every accumulated stain a badge of honor. All too often these sweatshirts get lost in the post-grad shuffle, or worse, stolen at a meet or “borrowed” by a significant other.

A True Original

To recreate the feel and durability of these originals, we hunted high and low for this hard-wearing and hand-me-down worthy fabric. We also nixed the drawstrings, not only to avoid their bouncing around, but also to deliver the lived-in feel of the best sweats.

Athletes from past generations didn’t have to worry about phones falling out of their pockets. Must have been nice. We upgraded our sweatshirt with an internal phone pocket and headphone jack, hidden inside the kangaroo pocket.

The humble hooded sweatshirt has American roots, tracing back to the 1920s and 30s. While Russell Athletic lays claim to creating the first sweatshirts for Alabama football players, Champion introduced the hoodie in the thirties as an innovation to protect high school football players and runners from inclement weather. Over time the hoodie has transformed from a functional piece of sportswear into an iconic fashion item.
