There’s nothing worse than heading out for a long winter run, only to have your fingers freeze despite your best glove-wearing intentions. Mittens are the warmest solution, trapping the heat your fingers produce when enclosed together. Ours features a double layered approach: on the outside is a mitten made from a water-resistant softshell with a 100% Merino wool lining, and inside is a second layer made from a soft nylon-elastane blend with a brushed back for added warmth. They can be worn together on the coldest days or used separately.

More Than A Mitten
We wanted to make a mitten that would provide protection from the worst elements. We started with the same waterproof shell we use in our NDO Jacket, lined in a bonded Merino wool for added insulation and moisture-wicking properties. Inside is a second mitten - made from a lighter Italian fabric with a soft brushed back. This mitten is detached and can be reversed for wearing on its own on less inclement days.
For the external mitten, we selected a technical softshell that is water and wind resistant and then bonded it to a 100% Merino wool liner. On the underside, we used our Inverno Blend on the palm and thumbs, for a little softness when you need to wipe your face or nose.
Not only does the internal mitten add warmth, but the layers created between the external and internal mittens trap warm air. The internal mitten's brushed back is soft and can be reversed when less protection is needed.
Nothing is worse than losing a mitten. We included small magnetic fasteners in the wrist of each pair for keeping things together before and after the run.
Rafa and Kamilah put the NDO Mittens through their paces during a winter training camp at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Long runs in 20 degrees require solid mittens, and there were no complaints of chilly hands from these runners, despite snow, wind and bitter cold.
No Days Off
No Days Off is our annual call for consistency, moderation and patience: the full-time, year-round commitment to the process. This is not a race towards injury, but a recognition that little and often beats grand acts of ruinous excess. Every purchase in January comes with a free NDO Calendar for tracking your progress in 2019.
This piece is part of our No Days Off collaboration with The Woolmark Company, highlighting the inherent versatility of Australian Merino wool for high performance in tough conditions.
