PLYMOUTH ROCK TO PROVINCETOWN
Our 2017 Relay Kits were inspired by one of the first long distance road relays in America. The Plymouth Rock to Provincetown Relay was founded in 1974 by Fred Brown. Unlike today’s highly produced and sponsor-heavy relays, the P to P was a “one man operation with very few amenities” that combined running and orienteering. As one racer noted, “The organization of the event, or lack thereof, is legend in the annals of New England running history. Race maps contained such notable landmarks as ‘unmarked road’ and ‘Marconi area.’” The Relay Shorts pay homage to the sights and sounds of this relay, as well as its carefree rule breaking atmosphere.
The Relay Shorts are crafted from our lightweight Bravio Blend, the same Italian fabric used in our Twilight tops and BQ Singlets, in vibrant sublimated prints. These race ready shorts are for those who take performance, if not themselves, seriously.
Fast Not Loose
Like their cousins, the Van Cortlandt Shorts, these shorts strike the ideal balance between race-ready function and common good taste. It starts by defining the proper shape - one built for speed, but cut for dignity. Falling in the 3” inseam sweet spot, these shorts are a modern take on a running classic.
Luxe & Light
No one does luxury performance like the Italians. So when we needed a lightweight and luxurious fabric for running fast, we turned to Borgini, the masters of technical knitwear, to craft our Bravio Blend. Designed for summer temperatures, the Relay Shorts are breathable, fast-drying, moisture-wicking and feel incredibly cool against your skin.
The Cape, as it’s colloquially known, is one of the best spots for summer running. Whether you’re training for the Falmouth Road Race or building mileage for fall racing season, the seaside towns, beaches and winding roads offer gorgeous scenery no matter where your route takes you. Plus a post-run beer and lobster roll never hurt anybody.
The original P to P course started at Plymouth Rock in “America’s Hometown.” Inspired by the pilgrim’s ship, the Mayflower (the replica of which sits in Plymouth Harbor, not far from the Rock) and the town’s embrace of all things Americana, the Plymouth kit features patriotic red sailboats on a navy background.
The largest community on the Cape, Barnstable is home to some of the best beaches for crabbing. Since the Barnstable police were responsible for shutting down the P to P relay in 1988, the Barnstable kit reflects an authoritarian tone - with gold crabs on a black ground.
A fishing town, Wellfleet is known for its oysters and was once home to a flourishing whaling fleet. The harbor is ringed by classic clapboard houses and full of boats. Our Wellfleet kits honor this nautical heritage with ivory whales tails on a crimson ground.
Long a liberal bastion on the outer cape - Provincetown is known for being open-minded to all kinds, eccentric and fun. Plus, it’s a great party destination for the end of a long relay. Our P-Town kits reflect the town’s lighthearted spirit with Tracksmith hares on a light blue background.
