To ensure this jacket was warm-enough for a snow day, with enough mobility for a long run, we selected a technical four-way stretch softshell that is water-repellent and breathable and then bonded it to a 100% Merino wool liner. Panels of nylon-elastane in the underarms and side gussets ensures full range of motion and also allows some heat to escape where we tend to heat up. With a streamlined hooded silhouette and minimal trim, this jacket is ready for winter with understated intensity.
Of The Game
We redesigned the NDO Jacket hood to ensure a more snug fit and updated the closure system to keep the drawcords inside the collar, which prevents them from getting caked in ice or, to add insult to injury, bouncing around and hitting your face.
Winter running often requires a few more supplies. We added an internal chest pocket for keeping things stowed away.
The NDO Jacket features two zippered side pockets for keys, a phone, or stashing mittens when things heat up.
The challenge of dressing for a winter run is to maximize warmth while minimizing bulk. Too many layers or puff and you’ve sacrificed mobility. This is where Merino makes all the difference. Instead of a down baffle, we used a layer of bonded Merino wool. Merino maintains its thermal properties even when wet and is naturally antimicrobial, so it won’t retain odor on longer runs or if you wear it day in and day out.
Rafa Oliveira put the NDO Jacket through its paces over a three day cold weather training camp at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Heavy early-season snowfall and chilly 20 degree conditions didn’t stop Rafa from executing his long run on the rollers on Creek Road.
No Days Off
No Days Off is our annual call for consistency, moderation and patience: the full-time, year-round commitment to the process. This is not a race towards injury, but a recognition that little and often beats grand acts of ruinous excess. Every purchase in January comes with a free 2019 NDO Calendar for tracking your progress in the year ahead. This piece is part of our No Days Off collaboration with The Woolmark Company, to highlight the performance properties of Australian Merino wool.
